Program Overview

What is biotechnology? Biotechnology uses cells, DNA, and/or proteins to solve problems and make life better.

Biotechnology is a broad and collaborative field that …

  • HEALS through the development of medicines, vaccines, rapid diagnostic tests, and personalized medicine.
  • FUELS the economy through the development of renewable biofuels and innovative products like energy-saving low-temperature detergents, pollution-eating bacteria, and biodegradable plastics.
  • FEEDS the growing population by making crops resistant to pests and diseases, increasing yields, decreasing spoilage, and making food more nutritious.

Studying biotechnology at Southeast Community College provides students with the necessary biology and chemistry background, as well as how to utilize laboratory skills to work in a regulated environment. Graduates can find work directly as technical assistants in academic, government, and industry laboratories. Or, students can transfer to four-year institutions leading to more advanced degrees in a variety of STEM fields. Coursework culminates in an industry practicum, ensuring graduates can apply their skills and be productive team members in a business environment.

You’re a Good Fit

You are a good fit if you are interested in pursuing a STEM major requiring strong lab skills such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, animal science, plant biology, agronomy, pre-med, pre-vet, pre-dental, and many more. Also, you are a good fit if you would like to work in science as soon as possible!

With a love for science, an inquisitive mind, and a desire to solve biological problems, come learn lab skills that will set you apart at the only college in Nebraska offering this unique program! Starting from the basics, by the time you complete your credential, you will have learned advanced lab skills taught in a research lab or industry ahead of your peers.
