General Education Requirements

Below are the General Education Course (GELOs)  requirements:

GELO #3: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving:  Credits: 3-5
Students must take one of the Physics classes from the list below.

• PHYS 1017 - Technical Physics 
  OR
• ​PHYS 1150 - Descriptive Physics * (Recommended)
  OR
• PHYS 1410 - Elementary General Physics I  

Students must take two additional class from one of the GELOs listed below. Credits: 6

GELO #1: Speech Communication

GELO #2: Written Communication

GELO #5: Analytical, Quantitative and Scientific Reasoning

• MATH 1050 - Thinking Mathematically * or higher

GELO #6: Career and Life Skills

Energy Systems Overview

Description: This diploma will provide a closer look at the energy industry including some of the technical aspects of the operations of various types of power plants including fossil fuels, green energy generation and nuclear power.

• ACFS 1015 - Success@SCC Credits: 1
• ENER 1100 - Energy Industry Fundamentals Credits: 3 *
• ENER 1110 - Operator Safety Credits: 3 *
• ENER 1115 - Mechanical and Fluid Fundamentals Credits: 3 *
• ENER 2102 - Nuclear Energy Credits: 2 *

Plus Any of the Following Courses

Plus any of the following courses to total a MINIMUM of 9 credits:

• ENER 2120 - Boilers and Steam Turbines Credits: 3 *
• ENER 2130 - Green Energy Technologies Credits: 2
• ENER 2300 - Coal Plant Operations & Troubleshooting Credits: 3
• ENER 2400 - Gas Turbines & HRSG Systems Credits: 2
• ENER 2530 - Process Plant Chemistry Credits: 2 *
• ENER 2550 - Introduction to Wastewater Credits: 3
• ENER 2555 - Introduction to Drinking Water Treatment Credits: 3

Total: 30 hours

NUCP

* If the student intends to pursue a NUCP certificate issued by the Cooper Nuclear Station these courses require a final grade of 80% or above.
