Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are one type of geospatial technology that offers a radically different way to produce and use “maps” to manage communities and industries. GIS is a computerized database management system for capturing, storing, retrieving, analyzing, and displaying of geographic information.

Geographic Information Systems technicians assist scientists, engineers, and related professionals in designing or preparing graphic representations of GIS data, using GIS hardware and software applications, as well as analyzing GIS data to identify spatial relationships or display results of analysis using maps, graphs, or tabular data.

Program Overview

The Geographic Information Systems Program is designed to meet the educational requirements of a prospective GIS technician. Technicians in this field generate, analyze, interpret, and communicate data derived by using GIS and GPS hardware and software applications. They may also set up and maintain GIS databases and websites, create maps and models for application of data, and provide technical support to users or clients. GIS is applicable to many industries and occupations, including, but not limited to, agriculture, public safety (fire, rescue, and police), public health, transportation, facilities, land and utilities planning, and management. GIS technicians possess outstanding decision-making, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.  

Classes are offered in an online delivery format.
