Types of Jobs Available
Pharmacy Technicians are employed wherever a licensed pharmacist works, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, home health, mail order, and retail pharmacies. Pharmacy Technicians help pharmacists dispense prescription medications to patients or other health professionals. Some duties pharmacy technicians participate in include: administration and documentation of vaccinations, receiving and preparing prescriptions, ordering and inventory management, sterile and non-sterile compounding, completing insurance claims, and customer service.
Employment of Pharmacy Technicians is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations due to an increased demand in pharmaceuticals and pharmacy services.
Program Overview
The Pharmacy Technician Program at SCC is a full-time program that is completed in 2 semesters. It is offered face-to-face and hybrid. The program provides the opportunity to develop entry-level pharmacy technician skills in acute care, long-term care, and retail pharmacy. Students will gain hands-on experience through classroom lectures, more than 100 hours of lab simulated experience, and 240 hours of clinical experience. The clinical experience is obtained at pre-approved pharmacies and hospitals.
Students are given one opportunity to take the national certification exam during the final exam for PHRM1231. This exam is offered through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. The program is recognized by the State of Nebraska Board of Pharmacy and accredited by ASHP/ACPE (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists). Online students who do not live in Nebraska must check with their State Boards of Pharmacy to make sure the program fulfills their requirements.
Students must be admitted into the Pharmacy Technician Program to take any PHRM courses.
