General Education Requirements


Take all of the following courses. Contact your program advisor to select general education courses from each category which will meet your program’s graduation requirements. See General Education , for a complete list.

  • GELO #1 Speech Communication Credits: 3
  • GELO #2 Written Communication Credits: 3
  • GELO #3 Critical Thinking & Problem Solving:  BIOS 2130 Human Physiology  Credits: 4
  • GELO #5 Analytical, Quantitive, & Scientific Reasoning:  CHEM 1090 - General Chemistry I  or higher Credits: 4
  • Take one class from either GELO #4 Global Awareness and Citizenship or GELO #6 Career & Life Skills  Credits: 3

Special Program Requirements


  1. Submit completed Health Statement to the Health Sciences Division (prior to admission to the program).
  2. Submit a two-step skin test for tuberculosis (after admission to the program).
  3. Submit flu vaccination (after admission to the program).
  4. A criminal background check will be required of each student in this program. Based on the background check, a student may be prevented from taking certain courses, accessing certain laboratory experiences, or completing the program. A non-refundable fee of $45 will be accessed for this CBC. Misdemeanor or felony convictions may prevent a graduate from working in the profession.
  5. Students admitted to a Health Sciences program at SCC requiring a clinical rotation at a contracted healthcare facility will submit to initial drug and alcohol testing prior to the first clinical rotation. A non-refundable fee of $35 will be accessed for the drug screen.
  6. Complete required program orientation. Program Director will notify accepted students of date, time, and location.
  7. All MEDT courses must be completed with a grade of 75% (C+) or higher to progress through the program.
  8. All MEDT courses must be taken in sequence and only by students admitted to the MLT program (or with permission by the Program Director).
  9. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required to graduate from the MLT program.
  10. All students admitted to the MLT program are required to wear laboratory attire while in program labs. The first semester includes fees to purchase student uniforms.
  11. Students will be required to complete some clinical education experiences outside of the Lincoln area.
  12. Students may be requested by clinical affiliates to submit to fingerprinting.
  13. A laptop computer is required for students in this program (see computer system requirements).

PLEASE NOTE: If English is not your first language, to be successful in the Procedures in Phlebotomy course or the MLT program, it is recommended that you have completed ESL Level 8 or higher.
