Surgical Technology


Lincoln Campus and Online

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are essential members of the surgical team, with responsibilities including maintaining the sterile field, handing instruments, providing sterile supplies, and assisting the surgeon.

Types of Jobs Available

These professionals primarily work in hospitals, surgery centers, doctor’s offices, or labor and delivery departments. In addition to operating room roles, they can pursue various other positions, such as:

  • Surgery Scheduler
  • Materials Manager
  • Clinical Preceptor
  • Education Coordinator
  • Tissue/Organ Procurement Technologist
  • Private Scrub for Surgeon
  • Sterile Processing Manager/Technician
  • Medical Sales Representative
  • Traveling Surgical Technologist
  • Program Instructor/Director

Program Overview

The Surgical Technologist program is available both on-campus at the Lincoln Campus and online. The online version is designed for students outside the Lincoln area, with clinical sites available in various locations. The program is structured to be flexible for different schedules, offering both full-time and part-time options.

Full-Time Track:

  • 12 months in duration
  • Includes in-person or online classes with in person labs and clinical rotations
  • Starts in the Spring (Application opens September 1st)
  • Daytime hours Monday through Friday

Part-Time Track:

  • 22 months in duration
  • Combines online coursework with in-person lab and clinical rotations
  • Starts in the Fall (Application opens February 1st)
  • Requires 25-35 hours per week on coursework

Clinical and Lab Experience:

  • Both tracks require completing clinical hours at pre-approved sites affiliated with the program.
  • Online students need to attend labs at one of four approved lab instructional sites located in Lexington, Lincoln, Kearney or Norfolk, Nebraska.

National Certification (CST) Exam:

  • Students will take the National Certification (CST) Examination before graduation.
  • Upon verification of graduation, successful candidates will receive certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
