ENGL 2900 - English Certificate Capstone

In this independent study, students work collaboratively with a mentor faculty member to design and complete a self-directed project in writing and communication. Drawing on the skills developed throughout the English certificate program, students may pursue creative or analytical work across a range of genres, including short fiction, personal or lyric essay, feature writing, poetry, or other forms negotiated with the mentor. At the outset of the course, students and their mentor establish a written agreement outlining the project’s goals, scope, and benchmarks for completion. A minimum of 15 guided hours of work - including meetings with the mentor, drafting, revision, and reflection - is required to earn credit. This course offers students the opportunity to deepen their practice as writers, explore a subject of genuine personal interest, and produce a polished piece of work that reflects the full range of their abilities.
